Its really that large!
Folks – Godzilla was not a gecko. And not all ice cubes are made equal. When I was at a new-ish pub/restaurant called KPO at the junction of Killiney/Penang/Orchard Roads (hence the name), I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the largest ice cube commercially made for fitting into your high ball glass, without having to hack it into bits, of course. Speaking with the friendly bartender, he looked around before revealing in a whisper that the establishment only has 8 pieces of these maxi ice cubes per day from a supplier. Now I know to get there early and ask for these puppies cos I am now in-the-know.
Anyone who delights in whiskey would usually know that the not-so-obvious benefit of such a large singular piece of frozen water is more chilling power with less surface area in contact with your precious beverage. So what this means is that it will melt slower and dilute your drink less than a handful of ice. So that you can focus on savouring the taste-defining moment without having to worry about a watered down drink in the next few minutes.

Balls of Ice - ready for my Chivas

Happy Chivas. Happy me.

I know you discerning drinkers out there want proof, so here it is - Ice ball minimally melted after 1 pack of whiskey consumerd. Approx ~ 10 mins.
Actually the best shape is arguably a spherical ball of ice – your learned friends well-versed in physics would tell you that a sphere have less surface area than a cube, volume for volume. And Andre, being my learned friend, bought just such a contraption from Tokyo so that I can make my own ball of ice in the comfort of my own home to enjoy that night cap with. Thanks, Andre! *simultaneous wink and thumbs up!

Less-than-perfectly formed ice ball size compared to the iPod. Actually it looks more like the Death Star from this angle. Vader would not be pleased to know I am melting down his home.

It’s a sin to drink Chivas on the rocks…. it should be drank neat…. Would u dilute an angel’s tears?
We totally respect your style. For some whiskies, especially the single malts, we like to add 1-2 small ice cubes as the water does help to open up the flavour. And the Chivas in question was consumed on a hot Saturday afternoon after a session of mountain biking, hence, a nice cold drink was in order!
Actually, there was a Chivas TV commercial a few years back where some guys went ice fishing. They grabbed chunks of ice out of the frozen ground, chucked them in a glass and poured their Chivas over it. Still, it’s all about personal preference.
Agree with both you and Andre, Chong. Its about personal preference. Like I drink my vodka frozen straight from the freezer if I’m at home.
But we all agree I’m sure what is sacrilegious: Drinking Chivas with Coke! Or [insert premium hard liquor brand here] with [insert soft drink brand here]. Warm water is something I do drink brandy with, depending on occasion.
