At some point in our lives, mundane activities will slowly find an annoying occupancy in our daily schedules. This is especially so after you finally move out on your own. When I had my bachelor’s pad in Kuala Lumpur, Monday nights was always reserved for a swim followed by laundry and mopping.

But one household activity Derrick and I both look forward to is a milk run to the supermarket. And this isn’t limited to supermarkets. We spent 30mins in a minimart once deciding whether to mix Black Cat whishky with apple or lemon slush. Maybe it’s partly cos we both enjoy cooking and it’s always fun to check out new condiments and imported sauces. And truth be told, if I ever go missing in a supermarket, my wife will instinctively head to the alcohol section where she’ll find me reading labels off bottles.

The last weekend was no different, we made a visit to Carrefour and to my surprise, they had Delirium Tremens in stock. It’s a beer I’ve sampled before in Tokyo and is seemingly popular with the Japanese. Delirium Tremens actually refers to the severe, uncontrollable tremors caused by the withdrawal after excessive alcohol abuse. Why anyone would allow this to happen, I can’t understand. The last time I experienced it, I went to my nearest 7-Eleven.

Confrerie van de Roze Olifant (Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant)

Delirium Tremens is brewed by Huyghe Brewery in the Belgian town of Melle. It’s unique taste is the result of the use of 3 different kinds of yeast. While it’s beautifully golden, it’s got lots of carbonation and typical of Belgian beers, a lot of head. It’s definitely not a brew for the less discerning because of the complex aroma – fruity, spicy, lots of herbs, hoppy.

It’s easy to spot this on the shelves, it’s packaged in a white bottle resembling ceramics and a pink elephant as an icon. If you’re into Belgian brews, you have to try this. But this is certainly not one for the average drinker, this brew is 8.5% alcohol.

While some beers claim to be probably the best beer in the world, Delirium Tremens was voted Best Beer in the world in 1998. Enough said.
